How do I transfer e-books to my new computer?

Jul 28, 2008 @ 01:25 pm by jgardenour

The process of transferring your e-books to a new computer varies depending on the e-book reader software and the level of copyright protection that each e-book contains. Please visit the following FAQ / Support section of each e-book reader software for more information.

If you are still experiencing difficulties in the transfer process, the retailer from which you purchased the e-books should be able to provide you with download links with a proof of purchase.

What are the advantages of e-books?

Jul 18, 2008 @ 11:08 am by admin

E-books have several advantages over print materials:

  • You can conveniently buy e-books from your computer or reading devices while at home, work, or on the go.
  • Text or words can be searched, cross-referenced or looked up in a dictionary.
  • Because e-books are compact electronic files, hundreds of books can be stored in the memory of your computer or reading device.
  • E-books can be stored on several computers or portable devices, making them accessible from multiple places.
  • If you lose an e-book, you can easily replace it by re-downloading the title (up to the number of allowable times).
  • Readers who have difficulty reading printed books can benefit from the adjustment of text size and font.
  • Most e-book reading devices allow reading in low light — even total darkness — with an included backlight.
  • Although electricity is required for reading, e-books are not made of paper or ink, making them considerably greener than the print alternatives.

How do I buy an e-book?

Jul 18, 2008 @ 11:07 am by admin

E-books are almost always delivered via Internet transfer or “downloading.”  In most cases, consumers purchase e-books from the websites of online book retailers and publishers (using a web browser such as Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox) and download them to their computers from the link provided by those retailers and publishers.

Before purchasing your e-book, you need to have an e-book reader software installed on your computer. Please review our e-Book Reader Compatibility Chart to find out which e-book reader software is compatible with your computer or other reading device.

What types of e-book format are available?

Jul 18, 2008 @ 11:03 am by admin

E-book titles can be available in several formats, each with special software required for reading.

Currently, these are the most popular formats being carried by e-book retailers and supported on this website:

  • Adobe PDF (.pdf) and epub (.epub)
  • Microsoft Reader format (.lit)
  • Palm eReader format (.pdb)

The reader software you have installed on your computer or reading device will determine which e-book format you should purchase.

What is DRM?

Jul 18, 2008 @ 10:53 am by admin

DRM stands for Digital Rights Management. A publisher or author of an e-book, not the retailer, determines the level of restrictions to be applied to each e-book, including how many times the e-book can be downloaded for single purchase, and the number of devices to which the e-book can be transferred.

If an e-book is encrypted, or copy-protected, the e-book can only be read on authorized computers or handheld devices by authorized users. On the other hand, if an e-book is unencrypted, or not copy-protected, the e-book can be transferred to personal computers or reading devices an unlimited number of times for personal use.
